O Agni, thou shinest with thy radiance through the days. Thou art generated pure, worthy of reverence, from out of the waters and stones, and forest trees, herbs and plants that grown on earth. Thou art out protector and ruler. One who acts according to the holy Law, you become his brother. Those who worship you, thou art a Son to them, and as a dear friend you guard them from every attack. The generous worshippers, who send liberal gifts to kine and steeds, to them who laud thee, O Agni, thou lead both these men and us to abiding happiness. May we in the assembly of the learned speak the truth!

Now laud Agni, as a charioteer, in race praises his own car, so now praise yoking of Agni’s car, the bounteous, the most splendid. He who guides his worshipper aright and withers the foe, without bring himself, withered by the age, Agni, the God fair to look upon when offered oblation. He who is lauded, in our homes, whose splendour is magnified at evening and morning, whose law is inviolate. Who shines like the Sun in his splendour, whose blaze ever, who sparkles with undecaying radiance. Him our songs of praise have waxed strong. Now he shines with all his glories. May we with the help of Agni, that of Indra and soma, yea with the help of all the Gods unharmed dwell, and overthrow those who fight with us!

He, who by birth was chief of the Gods, the most wise, became the God’s protector with his strength and power. Before whose great and mighty deeds the two realms shake, he, O men is Indra, the lord! He transfixed the earth that trembled, and set at rest the agitating mountains, who measured out the vast middle region in the space and propped the heaven, he, O men, is Indra, the Lord! He smote the Dragon dead, released the seven Rivers and drove the kine out from the Demon’s cave, brought forth the fire from between the two rocks, the hero ever victorious, O men, he is Indra! By whom this world can be made to shake, who humbling, swept away the enemy host, who, like a gambler collects his winnings from vanquished enemy, he, O men, is Indra! Many have an urge to know about him and ask where is he, the Terrible? Or some verily say, he is not, who like birds sweeps away the riches at stake, have faith in him, he, O men, is Indra! Who inspires all, the poor, the humble and the strong alike to work, urging also the priest who sings his songs of praise, the fair-faced one, and him who presses out Soma juice with stones laid ready, he, O men, is Indra!

Under whose supreme control are steeds, cars, cattle and villages all, by whose power the Sun and Dawns come to birth, who leads and Waters, he, O men is Indra! Who is called upon by both the enemies in the battle, the stronger and the weaker, by the twain in the same self chariot, each for himself threatened with danger, he, O men, is Indra! Without whose aid one never conquers the battle, whom the fighting warriors continuously implore for help, who moves the immovable, he, O men, is Indra! Who smote long before they knew it, with his arrows, the wicked foemen, who pardons not the sinner, who strikes the demons dead, he, O men in Indra! Who once discovered in the fortieth autumn Shambara dwelling in the mountains, and slew him putting forth his vigour, the Demon lying down, there, he, O men is Indra!

Who, the seven-reined Bull, most mighty, freed the seven Floods to flow at will, and shattered to pieces with his thunderbolt Rauhina, while he scaled the heavens, he, O men, is Indra. To whom Earth and Heaven make obeisance, before whose very breath the mountains tremble, the famed Soma-lover, thunder-armed, he, O men, is Indra! Who with his aid helps the Soma-presser, and him who brews it and him who chants his praise or offers libations. Whom our prayers exalt and the flowing forth of Soma and these our gifts, he, O men is, Indra. Thou Indra, who grants boons to men who press out and pour forth Soma in libation, art terrible and true. May we be evermore your dear friends and speak loudly in the assembly with our heroes!
