Against the Foemen

May Agni, the all-knowing, go against our enemies, burning against their hostile schemes. Let the Jatvedas confound the army of our opponents, and deprive them of their hands.

O, ye Maruts, art mighty in such matters, fare forward, conquer and kill them. The Vasus will crush them when implored. Agni, in their vanguard shall skillfully assail them.

Do ye twain, O Indra, Vritra-slayer and Agni, burn against the hostile army who fight against us.

Carried forward, O Indra, by thy two bay steeds, crush the enemies with thy thunderbolt. Slay them, smite that resist, pursue or flee, deprive their schemes of fulfilment!

O Indra, confound the enemy forces. With the blast of fire and of wind, scatter and make them disappear.

Against Enemies

Confounding the mind of our enemies, seize thou their bodies and depart. O goddess Apava, Attack them, burn their hearts with fire, strike them with fits and let them abide in darkness!

Yonder army of our enemies, O Maruts, that comes to fight against us, strike ye it with confounding darkness, that one may not know the other.

For Establishing a King

Rise thou with splendour and go forward as the lord of the people for thy kingdom has come to thee, thou a sovereign ruler. Let all the regions of the compass call thee, O king, attended and revered be thou!

These people, these five heavenly directions shall choose thee king. Rest on the summit of kingship, and then do thou mighty one, give good things to us!

May thy kinsmen come unto thee calling, Agni shall go along with them as swift messenger. May thy queens, thy sons be ever devoted to thee. May thou as mighty one receive rich tribute.

May the twain Ashvins first, then both Mitra and Varuna, all the deities, and the Maruts, call thee. Then put thy mind to the distribution of good things among us.

Hasten forth hither from the furthest distance, both Heaven and Earth shall be propitious to thee. King Varuna himself called thee; do thou come hither!

The wealthy divinities of the road, of different forms, and assembling together have given thee wide domain. They all in accord shall call thee; to the tenth decade of thy life rule here as a mighty king!

An Amulet for Prosperity

Hither has arrived the prana-amulet, with its strength mighty in slaying our rivals. It is the might of the gods, the sap of the herbs, may it unremittingly enliven me with energy.

O amulet of prana-wood, maintain in me the power of rule, in me maintain wealth. May I be established in the sphere of royalty be the sovereign.

This very dear and my own amulet, that the gods deposited hidden in the forest tree, the same the gods shall grant us to wear, together with long life.

This prana-amulet, the strength of Soma, has come here, given by Indra, instructed by Varuna. May I shining in splendour, wear it during the long life of hundred autumns!

This prana-amulet has ascended upon me in order to give complete unharmedness that I may be superior both to friends and allies.

The skilled chariot-builders, the skilful metal-smiths, do them all, O prana-amulet, make my aids!

The kings and the king-makers the charioteers, the commanders, and the people around me, do thou prana, make all my aids.

Body protecting art thou, O prana, a hero, brother of me. With the year's brilliancy do I fasten thee, O amulet!

The Asvattha Tree

A male is born from a male, the asvattha from the Khadira. May it smite my foes, whom I hate and who hate me.

Wipe them out, O asvattha, my foes as they come forward, thou expeller, allied with Vritra-slaying Indra, with Mitra and with Varuna.

O asvattha, as thou didst break forth into the great sea of atmosphere, so do thou break out al those whom I hate and who hate me.

Let my foes float down like a boat severed from its moorings. Let there be no returning again for those divine away by the expelling one.

I drive them away with my mind, drive them out with my intent and also with my incantation. We thrust them out with a branch of asvattha tree.

Against Inherited Disease

On the head of the swift-footed stag is a remedy. It has driven the inherited disease away scattering in all directions by means of its horn.

The stag has gone after thee with his four feet. O horn, do thou unfasten the inherited disease (kshetriya) that clings to his heart.

The horn that shines down yonder like a roof with four sides, therewith we drive out every kshetriya disease from thy limbs.

Verily, the Waters are remedial, they are disease expeller, the Waters heal all ailments. Let them relieve thee from kshetriya.

With the fading out of the constellations, and the fading out of dawns, fade out from us every evil, fade out every kshetriya.

Prayer for Authority

May Mitra, the friendlike come arranging the seasons and uniting the earth with the ruddy ones. May Varuna, Vayu, Agni grant us great royalty.

May Dhatar, Rati, Savitar enjoy my oblations here. May Indra, Tvashtar listen my prayers; I call upon the divine Aditi, mother of gods so that I may be most respected man among my fellows.

I invoke Soma, Savitar, and the Adhityas with many acts of homage for this pre-eminence. May this Agni shine for long, kindled by my companions who never say no.

May ye be present here and not go away. May an active herdsmen, lord of wealth bring you here. May ye with your desires attend upon his wishes. May all the gods drive you together here.

Against Demons

Of the Karshpha and Vishapha heaven is father and earth the mother, Oh Gods, as ye have inflicted the trouble so do ye remove it again.

Without the fastening of the protecting plants they held fast, so it was done by Manu. The Vishkandha do I render impotent like a Castrater of the cattle. A hundred and one Vishkandhas are spread out over the earth, for these at the beginning brought thee out, the amulate which destroys Vishkandhas.
