Agni, the Gods’ envoy hath been sent down here with one accord. O thou eternal learned, devoted to Gods, Agni, they have kindled thee, the immortal among the mortals. O Agni, bring hither your dear and brother-like Varuna, who loves sacrifice, Aditya, the effulgent, upholder of Law and guardian of mankind, and the King, supporter of human beings. O Friend, turn hither our friend and well-wisher like a wheel or as a swift steed, and O thou remover of afflictions be nigh be nigh unto us. O Agni, find favour for us with Varuna and with Maruts, who illumine the world like the Sun. Bless us, thou effulgent, with progeny and happiness, O banisher of ignorance. Thous knower of Varuna, sweep far away from us the Gods displeasure. Thou the best convey or of oblations, the brightest and most refulgent, remove from us all those who are wicked and malacious. Be thou Agni nearest to us with thy aids now while the Usha dawns. Reconcile us to Varuna, be gracious unto us and grant your boons to us, the best callers on thee.

Fashion forth a vast net from your body and fare, farward like a mighty king with his attendants. Entangling the wicked in the net, transfix the foemen with your fierce burning darts. Chase the demons with your whirling weapons, follow them closeby, O effulgent Lord, in thy wrath. Shoot with Your tongues, the winged flames from all sides, O Agni, spread thy firebrands all around, unfettered as you are! Send your spies forward, the most swift in speed, be our never failing guardian. Let none bent upon doing evil to us, from far or from near, venture to cross you. Rise up Agni, spread your fierce flames, burn down our enemies to ashes with your sharp arrows. Let the blazing fire that we kindle consume like dry stubble those who would do us evil. Rise O Lord, send them far away from us, who are hostile to us, manifest us thou thine celestial powers. Slacken the bows of the wicked ones, annihilate them, whether they be kinsmen or stranger. He attains your favours, O ever youthful God, who walks the path of high devotion. Shine thou on him, O lord, riches, magnificence and splendour, fling open for him the floodgates of opulence.

May he be blessed and loaded with gifts, O Agni, who in his dwelling place offers you regularly oblations and prayers to please you, all his life. Listen, now I hymn your bounteous favours. May you receive this my song like a lover. May we adorn you, O Lord of steeds and chariots, that you may grant us dominion, we desire to serve of our own choice, the radiant one, shining day and night. So we pay you our homage and feel rejoiced in our hearts. Aid us that we may surpass all others in glory. The man who approaches thee with steeds and gold, and comes nigh in a car loaded with treasure, him thou grant favour and protection, and he enjoys your grace thereafter. I, your kinsman, destroy the foe with these words and the power that I have inherited from my father Gotama. Mark you these my words and the power that I have inherited from my father Gotama. Mark you these my words, ever youthful, most wise, the Lord of the hearth. May all the protecting forces, ever watchful, eager, speedy, ever friendly and never wearied gather here to preserve us, O God Agni, never failing! O God, your guardian rays preserved the blind Rishi from affliction in days of yore, he in his turn preserved the noble ones, O all-knowing God, from them who fain would harm the noble souls. With you, aided by you and guided by you we shall be strong and win riches. Fulfill both our prayers O God of truth, grant this thou whom power emboldens. Accept this fuel with which we serve you and the song we sing in your praise to win your favour. Reduce now the demons to ashes and preserve us from evil, from deceit and from shame, O friend great as God Mitra!

May Agni with his strong jaws and with fierce blazing flames consume them who violate the Law of Varuna and the commandments of Mitra, the best, most dear friend. They are like sinning young women who deceive their husbands. They, sinful, are false and faithless, they have produced this absymal region. O effulgent and purifying God, you have given me, as it were, a heavy burden in the form of this Saman hymn, solemn, great and mighty of seven elements, to me who is meek and weak. What is our wisdom and what is our wealth? Tell us, Agni, for thou knowest. What place is to be obtained and what thing to be doubled in the course of our journey? What is our limit, what is the Law? Why do we speed to the fray like a swift courser? When will the sun, the lord of immortal Ushas, pour forth his splendour on us? Tell us why they, unsatisfied with a speech lacking conviction, uninteresting and frivolous, address you here? O Agni, let those who are most beautiful to look upon, worthy of acceptance by all, rich in splendour, mighty, has appeared in the home. He enrobed in radiance shines most brilliantly, as a house with opulence.
