An Amulet Against Witchcraft

This attacking amulet, a hero, bound on a hero, is full of might, foeslaying, a true hero, a very effective protection.

This amulet slays enemies, makes mighty heroes, is powerful, vigorous, formidable, as a hero advances to meet the sorceries and annihilates them.

With this amulet Indra slew Vritra, with its aid he, filled with wisdom, destroyed the Asuras, with it he conquered both the heaven and earth, with it he conquered the four quarters.

This amulet of sraktya wood assails and attacks, forcibly removes and controls the enemies. May it protect us on all sides!

Agni hath said this, and also Soma hath said this; Brihaspati, Savitar, Indra, may these gods, the divine priests, drive the sorceries back with this amulet upon the sorcerer!

I interpose heaven and earth, also the day and also the sun. May these gods, the divine priests turn the sorceries back with this amulet upon the sorcerer!

The folk who make amulet of sraktya wood their armour, like the sun ascending the sky, it subdues and drives away the sorceries.

With this amulet of sraktya wood, as if with a seer full of wisdom, I have won all battles, I smite down the enemies and the demons.

The sorceries that arise from Angiras, that arising from Asuras, the sorceries that are self-made, and those brought by other, may these, of both types, go away to the distances across ninety navigable streams!

Upon this man shall the gods tie this amulet as an armour, Indra, Vishnu, Savitar, Rudra, Agni, Prajapati, Paramesthin, Viraj, Vaishvanara, and all the sages!

Thou art the prince of the plants, as if an ox among the moving creatures, as if a tiger among beasts of pray. This amulet that we did seek, that have we found, a protector on our side.

He who wears this talisman, verily becomes a tiger, likewise a lion, a bull, likewise a curtailer of the foes.

Apsaras slay him not, nor Gandharvas, nor mortal men, he rules over all the quarters who wears this amulet.

Kashyapa did create thee, Kashyapa did produce thee, Indra bore thee in human battle, and wearing thee he conquered in the strife. The gods made this amulet of thousand fold strength their armour.

Whoever wants to harm thee with magic, with consecrations, whoever desires to harm thee with sacrifices, him strike thou back, O Indra, with thy thunderbolt that hath a hundred joints.

May this attacking amulet, vigorous, all-conquering, verily defend our progeny and wealth, a very auspicious defence!

Eliminate our foes in the south, eliminate them in the north, eliminate O Indra, our foes in the west. Place light, O hero, in front of us, in the east.

A protection for me be the heaven and earth, a protection the day, a protection the sun, a protection for me be both Indra and Agni. May Dhatar assign an armour to me!

The formidable defence of Indra and Agni, which not all the gods together can pierce through, may that great armour protect my body on all sides, so that I may attain ripe old age and long life.

This divine amulet has ascended upon me unto great unharmedness. Assemble ye together around this post that protects body, provides threefold armour in order to grant vigour.

In this may Indra implant manliness, do ye, O gods, assemble around it in order to gain long life of a hundred autumns, that he may reach ripe old age.

May Indra, the bestower of welfare, the lord of the people, Vritra-slayer, subduer of the foes, he who conquers and is unconquered, the soma-drinking bull, that makes one fearless, bind this amulet on thee. May it defend thee on all sides, by day and by night!

To Medicinal Plants for Restoration of Health

The herbs that are brown, and that are white, the red ones, the spotted ones, the sable and black herbs, all of them do we call.

May they save this man from the disease of consumption sent by gods, the herbs of which heaven has been the sire, earth the mother, ocean the root.

The waters were in the beginning, and the heavenly herbs, they have driven out from every limb the sinful consumption of this man.

The herbs that spread forth, the bushy one, single-seathed ones, those that creep along, do I invoke. I call on thy behalf the herbs and plants that have shoots, that contain stalks, that spread out their branches, and those derived from all the gods, the strong ones, which provide life to men.

With that power which is yours, ye mighty ones, with the power and strength which is yours, with that do ye, O herbs, release this man from this disease. Now do I make a cure.

These various plants, lively, by no means harmful living herbs, disease removing, flourishing, rich and sweet, do I invoke to free this man from harm.

May all the forethoughtful, intelligent plants come hither, aid to my spell so that we may bring out this man out of distress.

They are the food of Agni, embryo of the waters, they that grow up renewing themselves, the fixed, that bear a thousand names, the healing ones, may they all come hither!

The plants whose womb is avaka, whose sap are the waters, the sharp-thorned, shall thrust away distress!

The herbs that release from Varuna (dropsy), are formidable and remove poison, also those which remove balsa and those which ward off witchcraft, shall come hither!

The plants which have been bought, the very potent ones, that which are praised shall protect in this village the kine, the horses, the men and the cattle!

Honeyed are the very roots of these herbs, honeyed the tips, honeyed their middles, honeyed their leaves, honeyed their blossoms. Partaking of honey, they are a food immortality. May they yield ghee and food and above all the cattle!

However many may be these plants in number and kind here on the earth, may these, the thousand-leafed, release me from death and distress!

Tiger-like is the amulet of these herbs, a saviour, guardian against evil. May it sweep away afar from us the disease and the demons!

As if at the roar of a lion do they tremble, as if at the roar of the fire, they quake before the plants that have been brought hither. May the disease kine, and of men be driven away by these herbs across the navigable streams!

These herbs released from Agni, the Vaishvanara, may spread over the earth, go ye, whose king is the forest-tree!

The herbs, coming from Angiras, and those which grow on mountains and plains, rich in sap, shall be propitious to us, and soothing to the heart!

These herbs which I know, and those which I behold with my eyes, the known ones, and those we know not, and those invested with power, may all these herbs note my words, that we may bring this man into safety out of distress!
