FOOD OF SHIVRATRI

Shivratri day begins with worship of Lord Shiva, followed by a day-long fast. During the fast people are permitted to eat dishes made of sweet potato, besides fruits. Here are some recipes with sago and sweet potato.


UPMA WITH SAGO

  • 2 cups sago
  • 2 potatoes
  • 1 cup ground nuts (roasted and powdered coarsely)
  • 4-5 green chilis coarsely grounded
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp clarified butter
  • salt to taste

Method
Wash and soak sago in 1/2 cup water. Peel and chop potatoes into small pieces. Mix together, sago, ground nut powder, grounded green chilis and salt. Heat clarified

butter in a heavy bottomed pan and add cumin seeds. Add chopped potatoes and fry for a while. Add the sago mixture to the pan, stir and reduce the flame. Cover the pan and cook for 10 -12 minutes stirring in between. Serve hot.

Variation
Sprinkle fresh grated coconut, chopped coriander leaves and mix 1/2 tsp lime juice.





SAGO VADA


Ingredients

  • 2 cups sago
  • 4-5 potatoes boiled and mashed
  • 1 cup ground nuts (roasted and powdered coarsely)
  • 4-5 green chilis coarsely grounded
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds salt to taste
  • oil for frying

Method
Wash and soak sago in 1/2 cup water for two hours. Add mashed potatoes, ground nut powder, cumin seeds and salt to soaked sago and mix well (use water if required). Heat oil in a pan. Take one big lime size dough, flatten it on your palm, drop it carefully into the hot oil and fry till golden brown. At a time 4-5 vadas can be fried. Serve hot with ground nut chutney.


GROUND NUT CHUTNEY

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup ground nuts
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 4-5 green chili
  • 1 tsp oil

For seasoning

  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves

Method
Roast ground nuts using 1 tsp oil . Towards the end add green chilies, cumin and switch off the flame. Blend the roasted ingredients into a fine paste using just enough water. Add salt. Season.


SWEET POTATO HALWA
Ingredients

  • 1/4 kg sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup jaggery or sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp clarified butter

Method
Wash and boil sweet potatoes. Peel the skin and cut into slices. Heat clarified butter in a pan and fry sweet potato slices for a while. Add milk and jaggery. Stir well. Cook on a low flame till the contents become thick. Serve hot or chilled.
