At Atri’s bidding, Bharata despatched all the vessels containing the holy water and himself, with his younger brother (Shatrughna), Atri the sage and the saints and holy men, went to the fathomless well:


- and in that sacred place he deposited the holy water. Then thus spoke Atri in a rapture of affection: ‘Son, this place has brought success to the striver from all eternity; but time had obscured it, and it was known to no one.


Then my servants (disciples) saw the spot was rich in subterranean springs of water and dug a deep well in it for a supply of good water. By the decree of fate the whole world has found in it a blessing, and now a merit most difficult to compass has been rendered easy. (it is by the decree of fate that water from all the holy places has been deposited in this sacred well. No human being could ever think of bringing all the holy places together at one place and doing what Providence has done by rendering this well so holy, a repository of the sacredness of all the great shrines. That which was unimaginable and most difficult earlier is now easily attainable.)


Henceforth people will call it, “Bharata’s well,” a well hallowed in a special degree by the water of the sacred places uniting in it, and all who bathe here with devotion and due ceremony will be made pure in thought and word and deed.


Speaking expansively of the well’s great glory, they all returned to the hermitage of Raghunatha, where Atri the sage explained to Rama the blessed efficacy of that holy place.


The night was happily spent in loving discourse on sacred legends until it was dawn. Having performed their daily duties, with the permissio of Rama, Atri and the guru (Vasishtha), the two brothers, Bharata and Shatrughna,


- went with all their retinue in simple attire to roam in Rama’s wood. Feeling inwardly ashamed at the thought that the two brothers walked unshod on their delicate feet, Earth smoothed herself,
