When Narada saw the Blessed Lord thus grieving for the loss of his beloved, he was much disquieted. ‘It is in submission to my curse,’ he thought, ‘that the Lord is bearing this weight of woe.


I must therefore go and visit so noble a Lord, for I may never find so suitable an opportunity again.’ Thus reflecting, Narada went, lute in hand, to the spot where the Lord was seated at ease.


In dulcet tones he sang the exploits of Rama, affectionately dwelling upon them in all detail. As he prostrated himself, Rama raised him up and held him in his embrace for a long time.


Having asked him how he fared, he seated him by his side, while Lakshmana reverently washed his feet.


Perceiving that the Lord was pleased at heart, Narada made much supplication and folding his lotus hands, spoke as follows:


‘Listen, O most generous Raghunatha! You are the giver of gracious boons that are unattainable yet easy to attain. Grant me, O master, one boon that I ask, though you who know the secrets of all hearts already know it.’


You know my disposition, dear sage; do I ever hide anything from my devotees? What object do I hold so dear, O chief of sages, that you may not ask for it?
