Hearing all this, Sugriva was stricken with terror; he said, ‘Gross sensuality has robbed me of my senses. Now, O Son of the Wind, despatch a multitude of envoys to all the monkeys wherever they may be

- and have it proclaimed that anyone who is not back in a fortnight shall meet death at my hand.’ Whereupon Hanuman sent for the envoys, and after showing them all special honour -

- he employed threats and blandishments and diplomacy. They all bowed their heads at his feet and set forth. Just at that moment Lakshmana centered the city; seeing that he was angry, the monkeys fled in all directions.

Lakshmana then strung his bow and said, ‘I shall burn the city to ashes!’ Thereupon came Bali’s son, Angad, seeing that the whole city was in dismay.

He bowed his head at Lakshmana’s feet and made humble petition, whereupon Lakshmana extended to him his protecting arms. But when the Monkey King heard of Lakshmana’s wrath, he was terribly distracted with fear and said,

Listen, Hanuman; take Tara with you and with suppliant prayers placate the prince.’ Hanuman went with Tara and doing homage to his feet, hymined the Lord’s praises.

With much supplication he conducted the prince to the palace and after washing his feet, seated him on a couch. Then the monkey lord (Sugriva) bowed his head at the prince’s feet, while Lakshmana took him by the arm and embraced him.
