But Angad, after the deliberation, exclaimed, ‘Glory to Jatayu! There is none like him, who laid down his life in Rama’s service and, most blessed, ascended to Hari’s abode in heaven.


When the bird (Sampati) heard these words of mingled grief and triumph, he drew near to the monkeys, who felt alarmed. Reassuring them of safety, he went and inquired about his younger brother, and the monkeys told him all that had happened.


When Sampati heard of his brother’s exploits, he gave all glory to Raghunatha.


'Take me to the sea-shore,’ he said, ‘that I may make him an offering of funerary libations, and then in return for this service, I shall help you with my instructions, by following which you will recover her whom you seek.'


Having performed the funeral rites for his younger brother (Jatayu) on the sea-shore, Sampati related his own story. ‘Listen, O monkey chiefs; in our first youth we two brothers (Jatayu and myself) flew up through the sky, winging our way towards the sun.


Jatayu could not endure the heat and so turned back; but I in my pride went closer to the sun. my wings were scorched by the excessive heat and I fell to the earth with a fearful scream.


A sage named Chandrama (who lived there) was moved with compassion when he saw me and instructed me in many a wise lesson and rid me of my inveterate pride.
