Now, my Lord, look on me with compassion and grant me the boon I ask; whatever the womb in which it be my fate to be born, may I be devoted to Rama’s feet. O my Lord, bestower of all blessings, this my son Angad is humble and strong like myself; grasp him by the hard, accept him, O king of gods and men, and make him your own servant.’


After adoring Rama’s feet with unshakable devotion Bali dropped his body as placidly as when a garland of flowers drops from an elephant’s neck without his knowing it.


Rama sent Bali to his own abode; the people of the city ran in dismay, and Tara with dishevelled hair and a body she could scarcely steady broke forth-into wild lamentation.


Seeing Tara so deeply agitated, Raghunatha enlightened her and dispersed her delusion; ‘Made up of the five elements, viz., earth, water, fire, ether and air, this body is extremely vile.


The mortal frame lies buried in eternal sleep before your eyes, but the soul is imperishable. For whom, then, do you lament? When the light of wisdom dawned on her, she embraced his feet and chose the boon of supreme devotion.


(Says Shiva-) The almighty Rama, O Uma, makes all dance like so many marionettes. Then at Rama’s bidding Sugriva performed all the funerary rites with due ceremony.


He next instructed his brother (Lakshmana) to go and crown Sugriva King. Bowing their heads at Raghunatha’s feet, they all departed in obedience to his orders.
