'Lord, I am Ravana’s brother, born of demon race, O protector of the gods, with a tamasic body (full of inertia and ignorance), as naturally addicted to sin as an owl is partial to the night.

Having heard of your glory, O Lord, I have come to you with the belief that you banish the dread of rebirth. Save me, save me, O Raghubira, reliever of distress and delight of those who take refuge in you.

When the Lord saw Vibhishana prostrating himself with these words, he at once arose in great delight and, pleased to hear his humble address, took him in his mighty arms and clasped him to his bosom.

Both Rama and his brother embraced him; then seating him by his side, spoke thus to dispel his votary’s fears: ‘Tell me, prince of Lanka, is it all well with you and your family? Your home is in an evil place.

Living as you do day and night encompassed by wicked men, how, my friend, do you practise the duties of religion? I know all about your way of life, your great sagacity and your aversion to voice.

May Providence keep us from the company of the wicked! It were better, my son, to live in hell! Said Vibhishana, ‘Now that I have seen your feet, O Raghunatha, it is all well with me, since you have had mercy on me and recognised me as your true devotee.

There can be no happiness for a creature nor can his mind know any peace even in a dream so long as he does not relinquish lust, that abode of sorrow, and worship Rama.
