That monstrous horde – greed, infatuation, envy, arrogance and pride – haunts the mind so long as Raghunatha does not abide there, armed with his bow and arrows and with his quiver fastened at his side.


The absolutely dark night of attachment, so grateful to the owl-like passions of love and hate, abides in the heart until the sun of the Lord’s glory rises therein.


Now that I have seen your lotus feet, Rama, all is well with me and all my grave fears are at an end. The threefold torments of mortal life cease to have any effect on him, O Lord of grace, who enjoys your favour.


I am but a demon, so utterly vile of nature that I have never practised virtue. Yet the Lord, whose form even the sages fail to comprehend for all their profound meditation, has been pleased to clasp me to his heart!


I am blest beyond measure, O Rama, sum of all grace and bliss, in that I have beheld with my own eyes those lotus feet which even Brahma and Shiva adore!’


Listen, my friend, while I declare to you my nature, which is known to Bhushundi, Shambhu (Lord Shiva) and Girija (Parvati). Even though a man should be the enemy of all animate and inanimate creation, if he comes trembling and looks to me for protection,


-abjuring all vanity, infatuation, guile and hypocrisy, then at one I make him like a saint. The ties of affection that bind a man to his mother, father, brother, son and wife, body, wealth, home, friends and family
