When the Lord perceived the intensity of their devotion, he did his best to instruct them in wisdom. They, however, could make no reply in the Lord’s presence, but again and yet again turned their eyes to his lotus feet.

Then the Lord called for jewels and costumes of various colours, incomparably beautiful; and first of all, Bharata with his own hands made ready a dress in which he clothed Sugriva.

By the Lord’s command Lakshmana dressed Vibhishana, which gladdened the heart of Raghunatha; but Angad remained seated and stirred not from his place; the Lord, perceiving his affection, did not call him.

Then Raghunatha himself invested Jambavan and Nila and all the rest, who, with Rama’s image enshrined in their hearts, bowed their heads before his feet and took their leave.

Then Angad arose and bowed his head and with folded hands and weeping eyes addressed him very humbly in words steeped at it were in the very essence of devotion.

‘Do give ear, O all-wise, all-gracious and all-blissful Lord, merciful to the meek, befriender of the afflicted! It was to your protection, my Lord, that Bali (my father) entrusted me in his last moments.

Therefore, recalling your vow of affording protection to the forlorn, forsake me not, O benefactor of your devotees! You are my master, my preceptor, my father and my mother, all in one; whither shall I go, leaving your lotus feet?
