You have met me, Garuda, on the road; how can I give you instruction here?’ Doubts are completely resolved when one enjoys the fellowship of the saints for a considerable time

And listens there to the delightful story of Hari, which has been sung by sages I many ways and sole theme of which – at the beginning, in the middle as well as the end – is the Lord, the great God Rama.

So I will send you, brother, to a place where Hari’s story is told without ceasing; go there and listen to it. As you hear it, all your doubts will be resolved and intense will be your affection for Rama’s feet.

Except in the company of saints, one does not hear the story of Hari, and not till that be heard will delusion take to flight; and till delusion is dispelled, one cannot have unwavering affection for Rama’s feet.

Without such affection Raghunatha is not won though you may practise Yoga (mind-control) or austere penance or cultivate spiritual wisdom or dispassion. In the north there is a beautiful purple mountain called Nilagiri, where lives the amiable Kakabhushundi,

Supremely conversant with the path of devotion to Rama, enlightened, full of all good qualities and very aged. He unceasingly recites the story of Rama and all sorts of noble birds reverently listen.

Go there and listen to the tale of Hari’s many virtues; so shall your distress born of delusion then disappear.’ When I had thus given him full instructions, he bowed his head at my feet and went on his way rejoicing.
