who among these has not been blinded by infatuation? Who is there in the world whom lust has not made puppet of? Whom has craving not driven mad? Whose heart has anger not inflamed?

Is there any wise man, ascetic, hero, poet, scholar or man of parts in this world, whom greed has not made a laughing-stock?

Whom has the pride of wealth not perverted? Who has not been defeated by power? Is there anyone who has not been smitten by a shaft from the glances of a fawn-eyed maiden?

Has anyone ever escaped from the fatal fever caused by the three modes – goodness, passion and ignorance? There is none whom arrogance and pride have not influenced. Whom has the fever of youth not driven wild? Whose reputation has not been marred by worldly attachment?

Who does not incur obloquy envy, or is not shaken by the blast of grief? Who has not anyone in the world who has not been overcome by illusion (the delusive potency of God)?

Desire is a worm and the body is wood: is there anyone so resolute of mind those body is not consumed by desire as wood by the wood-louse? Whose mind has not been sullied by the three passions – the desire of progeny, of wealth and of renown?

All these constitute the retinue of Illusion, formidable and infinite in number, more than any can tell. Even Shiva and Brahma stand in awe of her; of what account, then, are other creatures?
