Ever since Raghunatha accepted me as his own, no delusion has ever affected me. I have told you at length the whole mysterious story of how Hari’s delusive power made a puppet of me.

Now I relate to you, O king of birds, my own experience. Unless one worships Hari, one’s troubles will not end. Listen, Garuda; without Rama’s grace, there is no understanding his almighty power.

Without such understanding there can be no confidence, and without confidence there can be no love; shorn of love, devotion will not abide, O king of birds, any more than the lubricity produced by water.

Is spiritual illumination possible without a guru? Is it possible to acquire wisdom without detachment? Can happiness be won without faith in Hari? – so declare the Vedas and the Puranas.

Again, my friend, can one win peace without innate content? Can a boat ever float without water, though you strain every nerve, enough to kill yourself?

Without contentment there is no cessation of desire; and so long as desire continues, one can never dream of happiness. Can desire be overcome without worshipping Rama? Can a tree ever take root without soil?

Can even-mindedness be attained without spiritual enlightenment? Can anyone find space without ether? There can be no piety without faith. Can anyone experience odour without the element of earth?
